Every board has now approved an AI strategy. Far fewer have asked a harder question: what happens to the culture underneath it? The organizations that stumble in AI transformation rarely stumble on the technology. They stumble on disconnection between what leadership announced and what employees experience, between the promise of augmentation and the reality of anxiety between the cubicles.
Culture in the AI era is not set by the operating model or the deployment roadmap. It is set by the stories employees tell each other after the town hall like who:
- was protected during workforce shifts
- was treated with dignity when a role was eliminated
- figured out how to turn a new tool into a genuine advantage.
Those stories become the culture, whether leadership authors them deliberately or leaves them to the loudest and most anxious voices in the building.
The strategic question for any executive team: are you actively shaping the narrative of your AI- era identity, or are you ceding that ground by default?
Have You Seen This in Your Organization? If culture is fracturing under the weight of AI adoption or hardening into quiet cynicism, the fix is not another all-hands deck. It is deliberate command of the narrative, treated with the same rigor as any other strategic asset.
