Is it just me or does the phrase, “Artificial Intelligence” just scream that it’s not built for us humans? Maybe we could all warmup to it faster if some branding genius had the bright idea to call it “Natural Wisdom” or “Organic Consciousness.”

It’s neither of course, but as users [even that term sucks], we can’t forget that we’re the shot callers, not the AI. And our listeners are humans, and empathy is the bridge between AI and connection.

Do you feel it? We are living through a profound moment of disconnection. Employees are being asked to trust systems they don’t understand or might displace them. Leaders are being pressured to deploy tools faster than their teams can absorb them. Customers are interacting with AI-powered experiences that feel efficient but hollow. In this environment, empathy isn’t a soft skill, it’s a strategic one.

Think of empathy as the secret ingredient that turns a promising AI implementation into one that actually sticks. By deeply understanding the people affected by your innovation — whether they’re frontline workers worried about their roles, stakeholders managing risk, or customers who just want to feel heard — you can craft a story that resonates, reduces resistance, and drives real action.

Have you ever dealt with this? You’ve rolled out a new AI tool with genuine excitement, only to watch adoption stall. The technology worked. The ROI case was solid. But people quietly routed around it, stuck to their old workflows, or voiced vague but persistent unease. Chances are, it wasn’t the AI that failed, it was the story surrounding it. More precisely, it was the absence of one that acknowledged what people were actually feeling.

The disconnection problem is real and it’s getting worse. The faster AI moves, the more disoriented people feel. When humans feel disconnected from the why behind a change, they disengage — not out of stubbornness, but out of self-preservation. Empathy is how you rebuild that connection.

I’m curious. How are you addressing crossing the empathy chasm? Do you have a plan for humanizing your AI roll out? There are specific ways to make this process less terrifying, more exciting and empowering for teams.
