“That’s the way it’s always been done around here.”
This mindset is the quickest way to thwart innovation, and it’s how innovation culture and initiatives die in big companies.
If you’ve never heard the story about the five apes in a cage, the story is succinctly told by Jeff Bridges’ character in the movie, The Contender, in this video.
Innovating inherently involves taking risks.
Supporting others to take them while minimizing negative outcomes becomes the foundation of shifting away from a “status quo” culture.
In fact, an innovation culture can only exist when there is space to take risks and apply what you’ve learned from failure and promote, not punish, those who act on a vision for a better future.
Without the space to try and fail and try again, we stagnate.
That tale of the big idea followed by trial, error, failure, persistence, and cooperation with unusual allies is the backbone of every great triumph story in history.
Here at Innovation Storytellers, our mission is to help you bridge innovation divides and inspire confidence by communicating a shared vision and mission.
